Pathé 9.5mm Film to Digital – Home Movie Transfers
Realising the best transfer with Pathéscope film requires a wet gate restoration scan, this technique will help to reduce the visual appearance of emulsion ageing and projection scratching which much of this film exhibits.
We are one of only handful of companies globally that can offer a restoration wet gate on this format and we include this in our standard cost.

Much of the 9.5mm film dates between the early 1920’s until the mid 1960’s, in Black and White early Dufaycolor and the later Pathécolor (Kodak) types.
9.5mm Pathé is a unique centre sprocket film which can now be very fragile. It may have curled, shrunk or be so fragile that it requires very delicate handling to avoid breakage.
Fortunately we have many years’ of experience handling this type of film. It also requires a scanning machine such as ours with gentle transport, an open gate and variable tension to allow for shrinkage and the fragility of the film to scan successfully.
The examples are typical of the quality that can be achieved. Firstly, we give the films a gentle clean by hand and then scan in 2K resolution to resolve every detail.
Next the digital process of colour and contrast adjustment is applied. We also apply light grain reduction and sharpening. This process gives best results in the transfer of this beautiful film format. We then export to a format of your choice such as universally compatible MP4 files on a USB pen drive.
Pathé Projectors were quite harsh and as a result most 9.5mm film is badly scratched that is why we recommend a restoration wet-gate scan. We believe that every film should receive the absolute best care and treatment for the best outcome.
9.5mm Pathé Film to Digital Transfers
Baby Pathé reels are wound very tightly inside their metal casings. These tiny reels require gentle unwinding and re-winding onto larger hubs before cleaning and transfer can take place.
A modern white acetate leader and tail is added so all of the film is captured during the transfer. Our HDS+ scanner has gentle sprocket-less drive and handles this film without damaging the sprockets and adjacent film cells.
Although the film gauge is only 9.5mm this film format has nearly the same picture area per frame as 16mm. It can yield surprisingly good images when scanned correctly.
9.5mm Path film is easily identifiable by the centre sprocket holes rather than at the side like 8mm and 16mm film formats.
