British Pathé has their entire film archive of 85 thousand filmed news stories now on YouTube, dating from 1910 to 1976 the films include footage from both World Wars, interviews with survivors of the Titanic, the death of Marilyn Monroe, alongside other filmed newsreels and documentaries.
Our hope is that everyone, everywhere who has a computer will see these films and enjoy them, says Alastair White, General Manager of British Pathé. This archive is a treasure trove unrivalled in historical and cultural significance that should never be forgotten. Uploading the films to YouTube seemed like the best way to make sure of that.
As an archive it has holds significant cultural and historic importance for future generations and a great resource for research as well as obvious uses for TV, film and documentary productions.
The opening up of the archive also marks an important step for YouTube’s ongoing content strategy.
Anna Gayner, manager of UK News Partnerships for YouTube, said: We are thrilled to offer a global platform for these iconic videos and to work together with such pioneering companies in making this content available to 1 billion users worldwide.
“This is a very exciting step in hosting the audiovisual archive of the world’s history.
Meaning that the archive, which has only been available on the British Pathé website, will now be embeddable and sharable for the first time.
